Federal Aviation Administration

The Federal Aviation Administration disseminates flight standards and regulatory guidance information to aircraft inspectors, engineers, parts manufacturers, pilots, and airline operators around the world. The FAA was one of the early government adopters in web technology, but its numerous business units and lack of design standards resulted in a disconnected experience for users who frequented the organization's two most popular sites, the Regulatory and Guidance Library and the Flight Standards Information System. Their solution was AVSIMS, a single online repository that consolidates all aviation safety information and related resources.

I was Human Factors International's Lead UX Designer for the AVSIMS project. My responsibilities were to create a unified interface that would be familiar to users of the existing sites -- and to build a scalable information architecture that accommodates repository growth and the integration of social media tools.
